A new software package gDefrag (graph-based land defragmentation), produced in collaboration with Frederico Mestre and Fernando Ascensão, has just been added to the official R repository CRAN. The package provides a straightforward way of prioritizing linear infrastructures (such as roads or railways) for an optimal placement of mitigation measures in order to minimize the fragmentation of wild animal populations. Unlike most other methods for the same goal, this procedure is fully scalable, so it can be used efficiently over wide biogeographical areas. We have also written a brief users guide, and are currently applying the method to broad-scale analyses.
